Abstract:
We give a gentle introduction to McShane identities a special class of trigonometric identity for hyperbolic surfaces and demonstrate Mirzakhani's technique for computing the Weil -Petersson volume of moduli spaces bordered hyperbolic surfaces. We also give a big-picturification of how these volume computations may be used to study the growth rate of simple closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces, and report on some recent work in this direction.
