摘 要：In 1980's, Vaughan Jones discovered his Jones polynomials when he was studying operator algebras. At that time it was quite surprising why such topological invariants would arise from functional analysis, but later people realized that it is conformal field theory which relates the two apparently very different branches of mathematics. In this talk I will briefly explain why conformal field theory is the key to understanding the relations between operator algebras and low dimensional topology, and discuss some of the recent progresses in this direction.
