摘  要：In this talk we report on some new progress in setting up  an abstract framework, under which Morse theoretical methods can be applied to some non compact variational problem by computing the difference of topology induced by the so called  "critical points at infinity". As application we show how to apply such a method to the Nirenberg problem on spheres, recovering all existence results available in the literature.
