Abstract:As part of the Weak Cosmic Censorship (WCC) conjecture, it has long been speculated by physicists that naked singularity solutions to the Einstein equations should not exist. However, the construction of a family of naked singularity spacetimes by Christodoulou for the Einstein-scalar field equations drastically changes the paradigm. Nonetheless, it has been shown that these naked singularity solutions are unstable to some rough perturbations, thus non-generic within this class of rough solutions. In complete contrast, in a recent work with Singh, we show there exists an open set of the initial data leading to naked singularites in a localized Hölder class, therefore falsifying the WCC conjecture for the Einstein-scalar field equation in this function class. Our work showcases that the precise formulation of the WCC conjecture is open to debate.
