Abstract:

I shall give a survey on the index iteration theory of symplectic matrix paths developed in recent years. Then I shall introduce several applications of this theory including:

(1) Closed characteristics on convex compact hypersurfaces in $R^{2n}$,

(2) Brake orbits on convex symmetric domains in $R^n$,

(3) Closed geodesics on 2-spheres.
