Abstract:Wave propagation is one of the most basic mechanisms for the redistribution of energy in physics. In this talk, we will first discuss the dynamics of linear wave equations. In particular, we will focus on how the energy propagates along light cones. Secondly, we will discuss a model nonlinear wave equation to explain why the dynamical behavior of linear waves may still survive in a nonlinear setting. Finally, as applications, we will explain how to use the aforementioned ideas to prove the dynamical formation of black holes in general relativity.
