Abstract: Vortices are steady states, with radial vorticity distribution, to the two dimensional incompressible Euler equation, which occur very often in fluid dynamics and may become the dominant feature of slightly viscous flows. Numerical simulations and physical experiments show that small perturbations of vortices are ``symmetrized", leading to weak convergence to another vortex. Mathematically, the main mechanisms for symmetriztion of vortices is inviscid damping and vorticity depletion. In this talk, we will introduce the physical background, related linear and nonlinear asymptotic stability results, and explain the remaining major difficulties in fully establishing vortex symmetrization.
